The town church of St. Leonhard is located in the small town of Bad Köstritz in the Greiz district in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish Bad Köstritz and Roben in the parish of Gera of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The church was first mentioned in 1320. With the Reformation in the Reuss rule it became Protestant. After Köstritz became the seat of the Reuss-Köstritz branch line in 1690 , the church was rebuilt and expanded at the beginning of the 18th century.

In 1820 the church tower was given its present shape based on plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The interior was redesigned in a new Romanesque style in 1891 . Altar , pulpit and stained glass are also from this period.

In 1998–2001 the church and the surrounding area were extensively renovated.

people

The composer Heinrich Schütz was baptized in the church on October 9, 1585 . The poet Julius Sturm worked as pastor here from 1857 to 1885 . He too was baptized in the church in 1816 because his father was a pastor here.
