Heinrich Schütz Music Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heinrich Schütz Music Festival is an annual festival of early music in honor of the composer Heinrich Schütz . It takes place in October at three important stages in life and work ( Bad Köstritz , Dresden and Weißenfels ) of the artist. The Heinrich Schütz Music Festival is organized today by the Central German Baroque Music Association in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia eV MBM for short in cooperation with the Weißenfelser Musikverein "Heinrich Schütz" eV, the Schütz Academy eV Bad Köstritz and the Dresdner Hofmusik eV as part of the music festivals Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The cooperation between the Standing Conference Mitteldeutsche Barockmusik eV (MBM for short) with the Heinrich Schütz Houses in Bad Köstritz and Weißenfels and the Dresden Kreuzchor and the Dresden Court Music Association began in 1998 as the Central German Heinrich Schütz Days. The aim was to achieve a transnational to establish the music festival representing the baroque culture of Central Germany. While each have their own festival in honor of Bach (in the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia Thuringia Bach Festival , Leipzig Bach Festival , Köthener Bach festivals) and individual festivals Telemann and Handel were, 2010 was first a nationwide festival the importance of Heinrich Schütz emphasized for the baroque music of the region. The name change to Heinrich Schütz Musikfest is only one aspect. A tighter program structure that brings the three venues closer together should also take this into account. An artist in residence will be a guest at all three venues.

Claim and concept

Heinrich Schütz was the first German composer of international importance. Without his compositions, the works of Bach, Handel and Telemann would be hard to imagine. As a musician of international standing, he is honored at the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival. Internationally renowned ensembles play his works in the composer's places of residence. Just as Heinrich Schütz incorporated newer and more modern influences into his music well into old age, the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival is not content with making his works tangible in concerts or musical services. According to the annual theme, his works are placed in the context of the music of his contemporaries. The historical performance practice makes the sound impression of the 17th century authentic. From a musical as well as a socio-historical perspective, the similarities are just as interesting as the differences. Readings and exhibitions are also offered. In the future, composition commissions will be awarded and modern event formats will enrich the program.

Venues

The Heinrich Schütz Music Festival takes place at the most important places where the composer worked in Central Germany. His works can thus be experienced at his place of work. Changing concerts in Bad Köstritz and Weißenfels create a relationship with the time of Schütz in the city.

Bad Köstritz

In Bad Köstritz there are events in the composer's birthplace , a former inn that has been a museum since 1985 and provides information about the city's most famous son. Concerts also take place in the St. Leonhard Church, which was given its current character after renovations in 1718 and 1891.

Weissenfels

Heinrich Schütz spent his childhood in Weißenfels after his father took over an inn here. Here he sang in the Collegium musicum, a bourgeois musical association, was discovered by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen, who, overcoming class differences, advocated the admission of the young Heinrich Schütz to the Collegium Maritianum. After his career he moved back to the city on the Saale. He bought a house that is the only house of the composer that is largely in its original condition to this day.

Dresden

Heinrich Schütz spent 37 years as court conductor in Dresden. His main place of activity, the Protestant palace chapel , sank into insignificance after the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong converted from the Protestant to the Catholic faith. In the 18th century these rooms were finally converted into living spaces. The diverse venues in Dresden illustrate the importance of the composer Heinrich Schütz for the music history of this city.
