The Magdeburg Telemann Festival has been a biennial festival since 1990 as part of the Saxony-Anhalt Music Festival in honor of the Magdeburg composer Georg Philipp Telemann .

The Magdeburg Telemann Festival was first organized in 1962 by the Georg Philipp Telemann working group and the German Cultural Association . The working group has been organizing the events together with the city of Magdeburg since 1967 , the third festival days. The festivities, which usually took place around Telemann's birthday, March 14, were held irregularly until 1990 (1962, 1965, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1981, 1984, 1987) and changed names several times (1981: Telemann honor of the GDR , from 1984: Telemann Festival of the GDR, since 1992 Magdeburg Telemann Festival).

The program of the Telemann Festival consists of performances and interpretations of works by the composer. Another component of the festive season is musicology . In this context the following should be mentioned: the International Scientific Conferences , the Telemann Academies for music students and young musicians , which have been held since 1996, and the Opera Academy "Georg Philipp Telemann: The patient Socrates" . In 2016 Telemann's Lost Twelve Fantasies for viola da gamba solo were performed for the first time after their rediscovery.
