Daimler-Benz DB 604

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The DB 604 was an aircraft engine from Daimler-Benz . It was a water-cooled 24-cylinder X-engine with supercharging , in which four 6-cylinder rows were arranged with a cylinder angle of 90 ° each. The crankshaft was cranked six times - four cylinders worked on each crankshaft crank. As with the in-line six-cylinder, the offset angles of the individual cranks were 0 °, 120 °, 240 °, 240 °, 120 °, 0 °. In this way, even ignition intervals were achieved (one ignition every 30 ° crankshaft rotation).

During the Second World War it was developed as a possible drive for the "Bomber B" project . His two competitors for this task were the 24-cylinder Junkers Jumo 222 and the 18-cylinder BMW 802 . Since its development was stopped in September 1942, it never got into series production. It was one of the largest and most powerful German aircraft engines.

There are only a few examples of other symmetrical X-24 engines (= in-line radial engines with six 4-stars). These include the 2000 hp Rolls-Royce Vulture and the 1500 hp Allison X-4520 with a displacement of 74 liters from 1928.

A prototype of the engine is now in the Hermeskeil air show .
