Harald Mothes (born November 28, 1956 ) is a former German soccer player.

Athletic career

BSG / ASG stations

Harald Mothes came in the summer of 1972 from the youth department of BSG Motor Lößnitz to GDR upper division Wismut Aue in the neighboring Lößnitztal. In his youth teams he was used as an attacking midfielder and as a striker and was already intelligent in the game and dangerous for goals.

In the spring and summer of 1975 Wismut Aue had to replace some regular players on a long-term basis. So from May Konrad Schaller and Lothar Schmiedel did their reserve service in the army and were absent for half a year. Dietmar Pohl , who was also scheduled for military service, injured himself so badly in his last game on May 3, 1975 against FC Carl Zeiss Jena that he later had to end his career. Since the long-time regular players Ernst Einsiedel and Manfred Weikert also ended their careers and there were no external newcomers, the team had a great deal of bloodletting. So coach Bringfried Müller had to add players from the youth field to the squad. In addition to Harald Mothes, Jörg Weißflog, a talented goalkeeper, joined the 1st team. On August 27, 1975, Mothes came on for the first time at 1-1 in Riesa. He scored his first league goal on October 9, 1976 in the home game against HFC Chemie (1: 1). But by then he had not yet made the big breakthrough.

From November 1976 to April 1978 he had to leave the team to complete his army service. During this time he played at ASG Vorwärts Plauen in the second class league . From May 1978 it was again available to Wismut Aue . The team's coach was Manfred Fuchs . From this time on, Harald Mothes gradually developed into one of the best and most dangerous goal players in the Wismut team.

At the end of his career, the 1.77 meter trained locksmith had to witness how he relegated to the GDR league with FC Wismut Aue after a desperate season in 1989/90 , after the violets had successfully fought relegation for years and in 1984/85 and 1986/87 was even able to qualify twice for the UEFA Cup under the coaches Hans-Ulrich Thomale and Hans Speth . Harald Mothes was one of the best Auer players during his active time and was one of the most dangerous players in the GDR league during this period . From 1975 to 1990 he played 303 league games and scored 88 goals.

Selection bets

With his strong performances, Harald Mothes also drew the attention of GDR national team coach Bernd Stange to himself. And the association management finally opened the doors for BSG players to choose from. On March 28, 1984 in Erfurt Mothes played his first and only international match against the ČSSR (2-1), in which he was only substituted in for Ralf Minge in the 60th minute . Since Manfred Kaiser in 1964 he was the first Auer to play an international match again. His team-mate Jörg Weißflog made his international debut in the next international match against Mexico . In contrast to Weißflog, Mothes did not have a future in the national team because the competition was greater in his position.

For this reason, Harald Mothes became a fixture in the GDR Olympic team together with his Auer teammate Jörg Weißflog in the mid-1980s. He played a total of 29 games between 1984 and 1988, scoring three goals. Despite a successful qualification, in which Mothes made his debut in the last elimination game against Denmark in April 1984 in Magdeburg in a 4-0 victory, he was unable to take part in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , as these were boycotted by the GDR and other Eastern Bloc countries .

Further career

After his time in Aue and moving to Bavaria, he played for a few years at TSV Ampfing , where he was later also responsible for the sporting development of the football department. Once a week he passes on his experience as a DFB base coach to the youngsters. Harald Mothes is an archivist in a hospital.
