The Dakota, Missouri Valley and Western Railroad (DMVW) is a US regional railroad company in the midwestern United States . The company is based in Bismarck , North Dakota .

The company operates an approximately 890 km long route network in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana , which, due to the condition, can be driven at a maximum speed of 16 km / h (10 mph). Connections exist to the route network of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Flaxton , Max and Hankinson . The vehicle fleet includes 17 locomotives of the EMD GP 20 , GP 35 , GP 35R and GP 40-2 series with which 22,000 wagon loads are transported annually. The most important transport goods are grain and other agricultural products.

The railway company was founded in 1990 by Larry Wood and some local investors. The aim was to take over the routes advertised by the Soo Line Railroad from Washburn (North Dakota) to the south via Bismarck to Oakes and Flaxton in northern North Dakota to Whitetail (Montana). The company was awarded the contract and signed a 20-year lease to operate the routes. In 2006 the contract was extended until 2026. In the following years the company was taken over on other routes. The former SOO routes from Washburn to Max and from Oakes to Hankinson, the former Northern Pacific Railroad route McKenzie - Linton and the former Great Northern route Geneso (North Dakota) - Aberdeen (South Dakota) are still operated today . Operations on the branch line from Wishek to Ashley, taken over in 1990, ceased in 1996. Operations on the route to Linton are also affected by the suspension; there has been no traffic since 2003.
