Dallas Vienna
Dallas Wiens (born May 6, 1985 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is the first American to have a full face transplant in 2011 . It was the first such operation in the United States and the third in the world.
Work accident
On November 13, 2008, Vienna suffered severe facial burns. He had been painting the Ridglea Baptist Church in Fort Worth when his aerial work platform came into contact with a high voltage cable. Seriously injured, he was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital by helicopter.
Wiens had lost eyes, nose and lips. After several operations, his face consisted only of grafted skin. He was able to leave the hospital in spring 2009 and started walking again in June 2010.
Face transplant
In March 2011, a full face transplant was performed at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston . The fifteen-hour operation was led by Bohdan Pomahač and required a team of over 30 doctors, including eight surgeons. Vienna's eyesight could not be restored, but he can speak and smell. The operation was paid for by the Department of Defense and the results are said to benefit soldiers with facial injuries. Wiens had no health insurance when the accident happened. The new US health law allowed him to get insurance coverage.
Vienna's first public appearance was on May 9, 2011. Since the accident in 2008, around two dozen operations have been carried out on Vienna.
