The Dama de Guardamar , also called Dama de Cabezo Lucero , is a fragmentary female bust of Iberian art from the 4th century BC. Chr .; it has been in the Museo Arqueológico de Guardamar since 2012 .

The Dama de Guardamar was discovered on September 22, 1987 in a cult site or necropolis called Cabezo Lucero on the municipal boundary of Guardamar del Segura in the province of Alicante . Archaeologists date the bust between 400 and 370 BC. When the sculpture was discovered, only rubble was found, some of which had been blackened by fire. An extensive restoration was carried out in the Alicante Museum, during which the parts were cleaned, supplemented and put together like a puzzle. The restoration was completed in 1988.

Several animal sculptures were discovered in the immediate vicinity of the site, which may have been erected to protect the sanctuary.

description

The bust is made of fine-grain, pale gray limestone . It depicts a woman with wheel-like earrings that are held together with a chain running across her forehead. She wears a hood-like, almost wrinkle-free scarf as headgear; Another cloth (probably a floor-length throw) falls over this up to the shoulders. The dress is smooth; Web structures are not recognizable. As a necklace, she wears two pectorals with small stone or metal pendants and two necklaces of different lengths made of oval, flat and round pearls.

interpretation

Compared to the Dama de Elche , which it resembles in overall structure, Dama de Guardamar appears more archaic; Facial features, hairstyle, jewelry, and clothing are more summary and less detailed. The bust could be a portrait of a real but idealized female figure - perhaps a tribal princess or priest queen; However, a figure from the religious imagination of the Iberians (possibly a goddess of the dead ) is just as conceivable .
