Damassine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Damassine is a type of plum that is only grown in higher mountain regions in Europe and the Middle East. In Switzerland - especially in the Jura - the “Eau de Damassine” is distilled from the plum .

Description & cultivation

The damassine plum is purple, small, and about two inches long. The plum is not picked. Only fruits that have fallen off by themselves are picked up, as the plum only falls off the tree when it is fully ripe.

On August 16, 2007, the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) decided to enter the spirit of the same name, Eau de Damassine , made from Damassine plum in the register of protected indications of origin (AOC) ( Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée ).

origin

Ajoie in the canton of Jura is one of the oldest growing areas in Switzerland . Experts believe that the plum species originally comes from Syria and derives its name from the capital Damascus . A legend tells that the plum was brought to Europe between 1000 and 1200 as part of the Crusades .
