The Danaos Corporation is an Athens shipping company that operates container ships and charters them to liner shipping companies . The company, which is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, is one of the most important owners of container ships worldwide.

history

The company was founded in 1972 as Danaos Shipping by Dimitri Coustas, who had previously gained around a decade of professional experience in the field of ship financing. In 1987 the shipping company operated three multi-purpose freighters and the founder was replaced as CEO by his son John Coustas. In 1998 the company was merged into one unit under the umbrella of Danaos Holdings Limited , headquartered in Liberia. In 2005 the head office was relocated to Majuro in the Marshall Islands and the name Danaos Corporation was chosen. The operative business is carried out from Athens and Hamburg, while offices in Ukraine and Russia are responsible for the crew. The actual management of the fleet is carried out by Danaos Shipping, based in Cyprus.

Today (January 2014) the company operates 59 container ships with a total capacity of 345,179 TEU.
