Danh Vō (* 1975 in Bà Rịa , Vietnam) is a Danish performance and conceptual artist.

Life

Danh Vō was born in Bà Rịa in South Vietnam in August 1975 after his parents and older siblings had been evacuated from North Vietnam a few months earlier after the end of the Vietnam War . At the age of four, Danh Vō and his family fled Vietnam in a self-built boat from the Sino-Vietnamese War ; The destination of the trip was the USA. After a short journey, the family with the other refugees was rescued on the unseaworthy boat by a freighter belonging to the Danish shipping company Maersk and brought to nearby Singapore. There she was housed in a refugee camp. Four months later, the family was able to emigrate to Denmark, where Danh Vō grew up. He attended the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. In 2006 he moved to Berlin. Danh Vō now lives in Mexico City. His studio is located in a former pig farm in the Stechlin community .

An important theme in Danh Vō's work is the examination of identity, belonging and his migration history. So he puts z. For example, a chandelier with the title: “08:03:51, May 28, 2009”, which dates from the late 19th century and, before being used as a work of art in the former Hotel Majestic in Paris, hung in the room where 1973 the Paris Armistice Agreement to End the Vietnam War was signed. "We the people" is a work that consists of a faithful replica of the New York Statue of Liberty made in Shanghai in around 400 individual parts made of copper, which are exhibited on different continents; the title “We the people” is the beginning of the United States Constitution.
