biography

Hagul's parents, Bashir and Samira, moved to Malta in the 1990s . The family spent the summer vacation at Hagul's grandfather's farm in Azzahra, Libya. Hagul started swimming at the age of 3 or 4 and started doing sports training in earnest at the age of 12 at the Neptunes Water Polo and Swimming Club in St Julians , Malta. She has gained entry to Mount Kelly School in the UK, a school that has produced a range of Olympic swimmers.

The political climate in Libya presented some obstacles to Hagul's competitive swimming career. In Libya, women are discouraged from wearing swimwear in public, which makes competitive swimmers rare, but not unprecedented. After the political upheaval in 2011, the Libyan Swimming Association and the Libyan Olympic Committee had problems with funding. Swimming pools and clubs were running out in Libya too Despite the challenges she faced, Hagul qualified for the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, where she competed in the 100-meter and 50-meter chest competitions. Hagul achieved a personal best of 1: 28.59 in the 100 meter chest. She finished 68th in the event.

After her national swimming association was unable to finance Hagul's trip to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic Games. To fund the trip, Hagul turned to a crowdfunding campaign that proved successful. Hagul was the only woman to represent Libya in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She started over 100 meters chest , where she finished 44th.
