Daniel Farinotti

Daniel Farinotti (* 1982 ) is a glaciologist . He is a professor at ETH Zurich and researches at the Federal Research Institute for Forests, Snow and Landscape (WSL).

Life

Farinotti graduated in 2007 from the ETH Zurich as an environmental engineer. He did his doctorate there from 2008 to 2010 at the Research Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW), where he also worked as a research assistant until 2012 , and at the same time took a degree in applied statistics. Further scientific activities took him to the British Antarctic Survey (2010–2012), to the Hydrology Section at the German GeoForschungsZentrum (2012–2014), to the WSL (since 2014) and to the VAW (since 2016).

Act

Farinotti's areas of work include the hydrology of glaciated areas, the quantification of glacier ice thicknesses, glacier-climate interactions and hydro-glaciological long-term projections and forecasts. In 2019, a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience with Farinotti as the first author caused an international sensation in glaciology , in which, based on a recalculation of the distribution of glacier volumes and thicknesses, it was possible to show that the loss of ice in many regions of the world is caused by global warming is progressing faster than expected.
