Daniel Filipe

Daniel Damasio Ascencio Filipe (born February 1, 1925 on the island of Boa Vista , Cape Verde , † April 6, 1964 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a Cape Verdean journalist and poet of Portuguese descent.

Life

Born in Cape Verde, he came to Portugal as a child, where he spent most of his life. Filipe has contributed as an author to various newspapers and magazines, such as Bandarra, Cabo Verde, O Diabo, Seara Nova, A tavola redonda . He earned his living as an employee of the overseas agency in Lisbon ( Agencia-Geral de Ultramar ).

As an anti-fascist , he wrote many poems against the fascist dictatorship of the Salazar , which then had him arrested and tortured by the PIDE . He died as a result of torture at the age of 39.

In his work he dealt with the fight against dictatorship as well as with his African homeland, Cape Verde and the African question, with loneliness, love and intimacy . His work was influenced by neorealism. Despite his Portuguese origins, Filipe always saw himself as a Cape Verdian.
