Daniel Irigoyen (born January 2, 1950 in Buenos Aires ) is a musician and socially critical lyrical poet who is one of the forefathers of the "Rock Nacional" movement. As the singer and composer of the group “Los Mentales” he was recognized as one of the best voices of the first generation of Argentinian rock.

biography

Childhood and youth

As a half-orphan, he was brought to a village in the north of the province of Buenos Aires at the age of four and handed over to the care of his paternal grandparents. At the age of 14 he returned to his father in Buenos Aires and attended secondary school at a Franciscan school.

Artistic character

With the advent of the Beatles and the first disorderly reading of various metaphysical authors who had a great influence on him, he understood early on that a single form was not enough to express despair. Attracted more to mystical than to philosophical questions, he imagined divinity as the immobile engine of the universe and the ultimate cause of all things.

As a singer-songwriter , he endeavored in his lyrics not to emphasize the arrogance and hypocrisy of the post-war mercantilist society with political protest, but to counter it with a poetic message.

Beginnings and counterculture

Together with other personalities such as Litto Nebbia, Javier Martínez, Moris, Tanguito, Pajarito Zaguri, Miguel Abuelo and Pipo Lernoud, he was part of a group of action artists in the mid-1960s that called themselves “Die Schiffwüchigen”, a group of musicians and anti - Establishment - Poets who found refuge in the bars La Perla del Once and La Cueva de Pueyrredón, as well as a little later in the Modern Bar, which was directly connected to the Instituto Di Tella, which among other things was a founding niche of the counterculture in Buenos Aires was.

Musical studies

At the age of 16 Irigoyen had first drum lessons with Alberto Alcalá. At the same time he was teaching himself to play the Creole guitar. During his time with Los Mentales he took private lessons from the singing teacher and pianist Martha Nebbia.

In 1972, after completing fourteen compulsory military service (ten of them as drummers in the military band), he traveled to Europe with Luis Gambolini, former drummer of La Pesada del Rock and Roll and Pappo's Blues.

In the late 1970s he took private tuition in congas and timba from the Puerto Rican musician Freddie Santiago. In the 1980s he began to study the piano.

exile

In late 1973, Irigoyen returned to Buenos Aires to continue his musical career. On July 1, 1974, Isabel Martínez de Perón announced the death of her husband, the Argentine President Juan Perón , whom she succeeded in office. From then on, cultural life in Buenos Aires became untenable for many; Opponents of the Western and Christian life system and communists were persecuted.

Far from any political context, they began to arrest people, including Irigoyen one night when he was arrested at the exit of a theater. He was detained for several weeks without any contact with the outside world, almost without sleep, and interrogated and mistreated by officers on duty. After several attempts by a relative who worked in the police force, he was released. His plans to continue working with a rhythm and blues band (Avalancha) as a singer and drummer, he could not realize. Concerned that he would be part of the growing list of those who had disappeared, he traveled to Genoa. Since 1976 he has lived in Hamburg, Germany, and has been continuously active as a musician ever since, mainly as a singer and percussionist.

The most important stations of his European career include participation as a member of jazz-rock bands, salsa groups, fusion, latin jazz, accompanying international tours (e.g. Thomas Anders) and finally carrying out his own projects.

Books

In 1979 he published the volume of poetry "Pulsaciones a la puerta del hombre". From then on he contributed to various Latin American literary publications in exile, Tierrada 1, Tierrada 2, Strip , and was a columnist in the German music magazine Rimshot Publication - the magazine for modern rhythmic and multi-malletists. In 2007 he published the book "A un paso del cielo" (Confessions of a Survivor).
