Daniel Lazard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Lazard (born December 10, 1941 in Carpentras ) is a French mathematician who deals with commutative algebra and computer algebra. He was a professor at the University of Paris VI .

Lazard studied from 1960 at the École normal supérieure and received his doctorate in 1968 with Pierre Samuel at the University of Paris. His dissertation Autour de la platitude gave a characterization of the flatness for modules : A module is flat if and only if it is the direct limit of finitely generated free modules. As a result of its criterion, it can be shown that every finally presented flat module is projective . Soon after, he turned to computer algebra, specifically the solving of systems of equations of polynomials. In the early 1970s he was Maître de conférences at the University of Paris VII and then at the Faculté des Sciences in Poitiers.

He is not to be confused with the mathematician Michel Lazard , who also studied algebra.
