Daniel T. Jones (economist)

Daniel T. Jones is an economist , lean management expert, and business book author.

life and work

Jones is considered a lean management pioneer and founded the international wave of lean management together with James P. Womack .

After studying economics at the Universities of Sussex and Manchester, he started his research career in 1973 at the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR), where he did research on innovation in the energy sector and related industries. In 1979 he became European Director at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the MIT Future of the Automobile and International Motor Vehicle Programs. In 1989 he became Professor of Production Management and founded the Lean Enterprise Research Center at Cardiff University Business School, which he left in 2004 to set up the Lean Enterprise Academy in London. Here he is still active as a senior consultant today.

Together with his research fellow , James P. Womack , he wrote several bestsellers. That along with Womack and Daniel Roos , a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wrote and in 1991 published book The Machine That Changed the World (German: The second revolution in the automotive industry ) made the concept of lean production known worldwide. The three scientists' research had shown a three-to-one productivity difference between Japanese and American auto factories. The book has been translated into eleven languages ​​and sold more than 600,000 times. The last edition for the time being, enriched with current experience and knowledge, appeared in 2007.
