James P. Womack

James P. Womack (* around 1948) is an American economist. He was director of research for the International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge , Massachusetts, and is the founder and director of the Lean Enterprise Institute , a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and researching the idea of ​​lean To further develop “ Lean Enterprise ”.

Life

Womack became known alongside Daniel T. Jones as the co-author of the 1991 book The Machine that Changed the World (German: The second revolution in the automotive industry ), which made the term lean production known worldwide. The book has been translated into eleven languages ​​and sold more than 600,000 times. The last edition for the time being, enriched with current experience and knowledge, appeared in 2007.

Womack received his BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1970 . He received his Masters in Transportation Systems from Harvard University in 1975 . He received his doctorate in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1982 for a dissertation on the comparison of industrial policy between the United States, Germany and Japan.

From 1975 to 1991, Womack led a series of comparative studies of manufacturing practices around the world as a scientist, the most significant being the International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP), sponsored by the automotive industry with more than five million dollars .

Womack left MIT shortly after his book was published and founded the Lean Enterprise Institute, which he headed from 1997 to 2010.

He is married and has two daughters.
