Dannenhauer & Stauss is a German body construction company .

description

In 1950 Gottfried Dannenhauer founded a body shop together with his son-in-law Kurt Stauss in Augustenstrasse in Stuttgart. In the beginning, mainly pre-war vehicles were repaired and converted. Even before the war, Gottfried Dannenhauer had initial contact with Volkswagen at the Reutter bodywork plant in Stuttgart . At Reutter Karosseriewerke, he helped build car bodies for the VW 38/39 Beetle pilot series in 1938. Between 1950 and 1957 Dannenhauer & Stauss built around 100 convertibles, mostly based on the VW Beetle . The unit price was DM 8,892. The basis was the manual production of the body using a knocking mold, only the doors came from a press shop . Vehicles were also produced for other automobile manufacturers (such as DKW ), including the first copies of the DKW Monza . With the start of production of the VW Karmann-Ghia in 1955, the company lost its competitiveness. It still exists on Augustenstrasse in Stuttgart, but has been operating under the name Karosserie Stauss-Balbach since 2005 and only carries out vehicle repairs and painting.

Dannenhauer & Stauss Sport Cabrio

The body of the sports cabriolet is made from rolled steel sheets. Nevertheless, it was possible to achieve the total weight of the 2 + 2-seater car of 745 kg. The bodies were mainly made by hand using wooden knocking forms. Depending on the degree of difficulty and size, the respective workpiece was executed in one piece or in several sections, which were then adjusted and welded. Each of the two fenders consists of six individual parts that were hammered piece by piece and then put together. The rear fenders are bolted to the body, similar to the Beetle. Only the doors and hoods were shaped in presses. The low height of the sporty vehicles required specially manufactured seats, which were mostly covered with elegant Igelit synthetic leather. Most of the Dannenhauer & Stauss used the Beetle technology almost unchanged. Later, however, many cars were retrofitted with the help of a Porsche 356 engine or an upgraded Okrasa engine from Gerhard Oettinger.

Dannenhauer & Stauss Coupé

The standard equipment included a three-spoke steering wheel from Petri. The installation of a car radio was already prepared in the middle of the dashboard. Similar to the Beetle, the speedometer was located to the right of the steering column and a clock to the left of the steering column. While there were initially two storage compartments under the dashboard, from 1952 only one glove compartment was built into the dashboard on the right. The indicators sit below the headlights, while the series sedan was still equipped with indicators. The windshield, which was initially split, was replaced by a curved one-piece windshield in 1954. The backrest of the rear bench can be folded down if necessary. This gives you more space for luggage.
