Darts (rocket science)

The Loki Dart sounding rocket

A dart is a free-flying vehicle as it is used as a payload and attached tip of sounding rockets . The dart does not have its own drive, but is very well aerodynamically shaped. After the starting stage has burned out, the dart is separated from it and, thanks to its kinetic energy and thanks to its good aerodynamic shape, flies freely. Since it has a better aerodynamic shape than the start stage, it reaches a much greater height than this. Sounding rockets were available in versions with or without darts. The versions without darts reached a lower height than those with darts, but could carry a larger payload.
