With Darwine specific to Windows programs under Mac OS X are carried out without having to install Windows. The Darwine project is porting Wine to Mac OS X. The name Darwine is a combination of Darwin , which forms the basis of Mac OS X's operating system , and Wine . Darwine provides a compatibility interface for Windows function calls and translates these calls into Darwin and X11 calls. Darwine therefore needs an installed X11, which can be installed from the Mac OS X installation DVD if necessary.
In the meantime, the unofficial build of Darwine continues under the name Wine. Wine is now part of the WineBottler installation package, which can be used to manage multiple Windows runtime environments.
Porting Wine to Mac OS X became easier when Apple made its switch from the PowerPC processor architecture to x86-compatible Intel processors, eliminating the need to convert the x86 code used in Windows applications to PowerPC code.
