A horrific murder takes place in Stockholm's Sabbatsberg Hospital : the policeman Stig Nyman is slaughtered with a side gun by an unknown person in his hospital room at night . Martin Beck and his colleagues quickly realize that Nyman was a brutal people flayer who had made many enemies, and not just in the police force. They also called it the “Disgust from Säffle ” after its place of origin .

Since no clue can be found at first, the police are investigating many old complaints about Nyman in the archives of the police ombudsman . They come across the input of their former colleague Åke Eriksson, who they find particularly suspicious: Eriksson's wife was considered drunk by Nyman in a diabetic coma and locked in the sobering cell, which resulted in her death. The showdown finally takes place on the roof of a skyscraper in downtown Stockholm , in which Martin Beck is seriously injured by a shot.

The book was made into a film in 1976 by the Swedish director Bo Widerberg (original title: Mannen pá taket; German title: The man on the roof ).
