The small theater in Essen

The Small Theater is a private theater in downtown Essen .

history

The theater was founded by Helmut Gahmann, a former Folkwang student and long-time actor, together with some friends.

November 15, 1965, when the first premiere took place with the help of the youth welfare office and Count von Schmettow, is considered the day the theater was founded. For almost seven years the theater was housed in a youth center on Papestrasse in Holsterhausen and during this time it gained some fame through numerous guest performances with plays for children and adults. Then as now, the program consisted of classics and modern pieces, as well as fairy tales in the Grugapark .

In 1972 the Small Theater took over its permanent establishment on Gänsemarkt, where the performances have been taking place ever since.

After Helmut Gahmann's death in March 2005, a sponsoring association was founded under the direction of Ingo Scheuer, who gave the Kleiner Theater Essen a new and cozy ("plush") face.
