The light (Original title: Outside Looking In ) is a 2019 novel by the US writer TC Boyle , which tells the story of a group around Timothy Leary who experiments with LSD . The book was translated into German by Dirk van Gunsteren .

content

In the 1960s, Timothy Leary's group at Harvard University believed they could use LSD to expand awareness. In the prologue, a legendary episode from the life of the LSD discoverer Albert Hofmann is described: the “ Bicycle Day ”, on which Hofmann undertook an LSD self-experiment.

The novel tells the story from the perspective of doctoral student Fitz Loney and his wife Joanie: The beginnings at Harvard University, the interlude in Mexico and the finale in the rented 80-room residence in the country. It is about exploring the unknown possibilities of LSD, about the contrast between stuffy and new ways of life and about getting lost in the new constraints that develop from it.

reception

"A generation wants to turn the world off its hinges ... The novel, whose great strength lies in the extravagant historiographical reconstruction, ends ... with the unsurprising and absolutely youth-free punchline that such dreams lead nowhere."
