The Christmas Secret ( norw. Julemysteriet , 1992) is the title of a 1998 children's book by the Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder . Due to its subject matter and the division into 24 chapters, the book is particularly suitable as an Advent calendar .

content

On November 30th, Joachim, the main character of the book, and his father are still looking for an advent calendar. Eventually they find an old and handmade one at a bookseller who doesn't really know where he comes from. When Joachim opens the first door, he not only finds a picture behind it, but also a piece of paper. There are also papers like this behind the other little doors. They tell the story of a girl Elizabeth, who sets out on a pilgrimage through space and time to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus in Norway . The crowd of pilgrims increases every day by another figure from the Christmas story : shepherds and sheep, angels, the three wise men and others.

As a detective, Joachim tries - initially alone, later together with his parents - to find out who wrote the notes and whether Elisabeth from the story is a girl who has really disappeared.
