A peasant couple has three sons, the mother preferring the older and wiser two. The third son is discriminated against as "the stupid Ivanushka". When the tsar announces that he is giving his daughter Katharina as his wife, who is bringing him a flying ship, the older brothers try their luck first, but fail because of a "poor old man" whom they ridicule instead of giving him bread. You return home and continue to lie on the bear skin.

Ivanuschka sets off, shares his provisions kind-heartedly and selflessly with the old beggar. The latter tells him how to get the flying ship and recommends that he take everyone with him on the ship that he meets on the way to the court of the Tsars. Ivanushka does as he is told. He hits the first tree in the forest with his ax and lies down. He falls asleep. In the morning the flying ship stands next to him. On the way he takes eight men with him: 1. one who can hear extremely well, 2. one who hops on one leg while the other is tied, because otherwise he can measure the world with one step, 3. a Sagittarius who reaches 1000 Whoever hits a fly, 4. the "wolverine", 5. the "thirsty hose", 6. a man with magic straw: if you lay it out in the heat, you will create cold and snow, 7. a man with firewood: if you throw it to the ground, creates a large army, 8. a "strong man".

When the tsar saw the flying ship coming, he asked about the occupants. He dislikes the occupation of farmers. So he breaks his word and gives Ivanuschka several tasks: eat a lot; drink a lot; get a cup of water of life for the Tsarevna. When Ivanuschka can solve all the tasks with the help of his companions, the tsar first tries to murder in the sauna, which the protagonist survives thanks to the magic straw. Then the tsar offers as much gold as Ivanushka can carry away if he gives up the tsarevna. Ivanushka agrees to the deal because: "He didn't like the tsar's daughter." The strong man now carries all of the Tsar's gold onto the flying ship. The angry tsar lets his army attack, which is defeated by the firewood man.

The nine friends fly by ship to the island of Bujan in the blue ocean, where they live happily together.
