The term Data Post which offered German Federal Post a safe, fast and reliable transmission of since 1 September 1989 shipments . Data mail items were delivered to the recipient at an agreed time.

It was a form of dispatch and had nothing to do with electronic transmission. On March 1, 1963, the course letter replaced the previous station letter - a procedure that existed until August 31, 1989.

“Service offered by the former Deutsche Bundespost for letters up to 1,000 g and parcels up to 20 kg, whereby the shipments always had to be posted at the same post office or their collection had to be agreed upon there. The delivery took place by collection from the recipient, placing in a post office box or - for an additional fee - by delivery by express courier. The Data Post was also possible for foreign transport as an international courier service for different countries. "

From January 1, 1983, it was also possible to post a Datapost item at irregular intervals - for a special delivery fee. A monthly fee based on frequency was payable for setting up the connection. In addition, there was the usual postage fee, special services (registered mail, cash on delivery, etc.) were not permitted.

For data post connections abroad, a monthly fee of DM 120 had to be paid for the establishment and maintenance  . There were extensive lists of the transport fees. It was not necessary to affix a postage indicium on datapost items sent abroad. They were not allowed into the Soviet occupation zone or East Berlin .

In the official gazette 29/92 of March 29, 1990, it says: From April 2, 1990, the data post service with the German Post Office of the GDR will be started on a trial basis. With decision 99, the additional service “Datapost-Inland” is finally introduced and the central courier service is discontinued on July 1, 1990.
