A database is a set of data that is collected or managed in a specific context or for a specific purpose. The data can be stored in different forms, for example in databases or files , mostly as the content of electronic data carriers .

Depending on the data management software used, for example in the case of relational databases , the term “database” (terminating in terms of the DBMS management system) is understood to mean the data that are grouped into data records of the same type ( tables ), each data record consisting of several data fields .

The term "database" usually denotes a not exactly specified amount of data (like "the company database"). In parlance it is often used as a synonym for data stock , database or file; however, these expressions mostly refer to specific data (such as “customer database”, “order file”).

Examples

The following examples show what is meant by 'database' or 'database' as a quantity term that is not specifically defined:
