Data structure diagram
A data structure diagram ( DSD ) is a data model for the description of conceptual schemes, which provides graphical notations for the representation of entities, their relationships and also constraints .
The basic graphical elements of the data structure diagram are rectangles used to represent entities and arrows to represent relationships.
Overview
The data structure diagram is a type of diagram that can be used to visualize the structure of the data elements in a data dictionary . The DSD is a graphical alternative to the specifications within entries in the data dictionary.
The focus of the data structure diagram is on the relationships of the elements within an entity.
Bachman notation
An alternative name for data structure diagram is Bachman diagram - a notation that was used to model the data with a network or relational data model, whereby the data model is separated from the type of storage in the system. The diagram is named after the database pioneer Charles Bachman and was mainly used in software design.
