The David is a sculpture created by Gianlorenzo Bernini 1623–1624. It was commissioned by Cardinal Montalto . But when he died in 1623, Scipione Borghese received the then unfinished figure. The marble sculpture of David is still in the Galleria Borghese in Rome today .

Allegedly, Bernini created them in his mirror image. Cardinal Maffeo Barberini himself is said to have held up his mirror for this work. Bernini does not fully adhere to the guidelines of the biblical David. He does not represent a youth, but a vigorous young man who is just about to cock the sling to throw the stone at Goliath .

The narrative element is revealed when walking around the sculpture. Bernini studied his predecessors thoroughly. Donatello , Andrea del Verrocchio and Michelangelo already made David sculptures. The new thing about Bernini's version is the strong movement of the figure, a feature that can also be seen in many of his other sculptures.
