life and work

David Bittner studied biology at the University of Bern , where he received his doctorate in zoology in 2009 . In his dissertation he dealt with the evolution of whitefish species in the three large Bernese lakes. Among other things, he observed and examined deformations of the sexual organs of the whitefish in Lake Thun . In 2010 he was awarded the Bern Environmental Research Prize for this work .

As an adventure tourist , David Bittner came into contact with Kodiak and coastal brown bears in Alaska in 2002, and made them his personal research object. With patience, empathy and appropriate behavior, Bittner was able to gain the trust of these animals and document them in photo and film recordings. With the knowledge he gained there, he campaigned for the protection and preservation of these unique animals.

Bittner presented his bear research in special museum exhibitions (Museum der Burgergemeinde Bern) as well as in his self-produced film Unter Bären, which is broadcast on Swiss and German television . Bittner is currently working as a research assistant on a research project for the Federal Institute for Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Water Protection EAWAG and the University of Bern.
