David J. Eicher

David John Eicher (born August 7, 1961 in Oxford (Ohio) ) is an American amateur astronomer and author of books on astronomy and the American Civil War .

His father John H. Eicher (* 1921) was a professor of organic chemistry at Miami University in Oxford (Ohio). Eicher began studying physics at the university in his hometown and was an avid amateur astronomer who published his own magazine (Deep Sky Monthly). This became a permanent position in 1982 from co-editor (later editor) of Astronomy and editor Deep Sky , as his magazine was called after the takeover by the AstroMedia Corporation (discontinued in 1992).

In 1990 the asteroid (3617) Eicher was named after him.

He also published several books on the American Civil War, especially military history.
