David Walsh (art collector)

David Dominic Walsh , AO (born 1961 ) is an Australian professional gamer, art collector and businessman. He is the founder and owner of the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

biography

Walsh grew up in Glenorchy , a suburb of Hobart , the capital of Tasmania . In 1979 he studied mathematics and computer science for a short time . With a system he developed, he made a fortune in sports betting .

In 2001 he founded the Moorilla Museum of Antiquities on the Berriedale Peninsula in Hobart. This museum closed in 2007, only to reopen in 2011 as the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) after extensive renovations .

In October 2014, Walsh published the book A Bone of Fact , advertised by the publisher as " utterly unconventional and absorbing memoir" .

In 2016, Walsh was named Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of his contributions to the arts by founding MONA and his support for cultural, charitable, athletic and educational activities.
