De balneis Puteolanis (Latin about the baths of Pozzuoli ) is a didactic poem about the healing effects of the various healing springs of Pozzuoli, completed around 1220 . The author was Petrus de Ebulo , who dedicated the poem to Emperor Friedrich II . The book was completed posthumously. It is the first known work on the use of thermal baths published in Europe.

The didactic poem contains 37 epigrams with six distiches each . The content clearly shows that the author had a profound medical knowledge. A total of 35 different baths from the region around Pozzuoli are described.

Due to the increasing use of therapeutic baths at the time, especially by doctors who followed Galen 's tradition, the work was widely used, including translations into the Neapolitan dialect and into French. The manuscript has not survived, but there are twenty copies , ten of which contain extensive illustrations .

Some illustrations of the De Balneis Puteolanis manuscript show a similarity with illustrations from the so-called anatomy section of the Voynich manuscript and could have served as a template for this.
