Decatur County, Alabama

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Decatur County is a former county in the US state of Alabama . It was named after the naval officer Stephen Decatur . The administrative seat was Woodville .

history

Decatur County was established on December 17, 1821 by the Alabama Parliament . A few years later, however, an investigation showed that the county did not have the minimum area required by law, and so Decatur County was dissolved on December 28, 1825 and divided between Madison and Jackson Counties. The part that was added to Madison County was informally known as "New Madison" for years.
