Woodville is a small town in Jackson County in the northeast of the US state Alabama with 746 inhabitants (2010). The city council takes the form of a Mayor Council Government .
history
The first settler in what is now Woodville was Tennessee- born Henry Derrick in 1815 . The town was initially referred to as Old Woodville and was named after residents Richard and Annie Wood. On December 13, 1819, the city was officially established as Woodville by ordinance of the Alabama State Legislature , the day before Alabama became the 22nd state of the United States. Woodville was within the boundaries of Decatur County, founded in 1821, and was appointed its administrative seat. However, Decatur County was dissolved in 1825 and merged with Jackson County.
Woodville was on a trade route between Huntsville and Scottsboro and was a trading post for farmers from the area. In 1869 there was a shooting near the city between two warring local families in which two participants died. In the 1870s, the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway built a railroad through the city. The first school, the Green Academy , was built in 1890 just outside the city center on nearby Cumberland Mountain . Woodville received parish status on May 12, 1890, lost it seven years later, and got it back in 1912.

Woodville is connected to State Highway 35 , which runs northeast-southwest through the city, and US Highway 72 , which runs east-west south of the city.
Events and sights
The Bob Jones Community Center was named after Congressman Bob Jones and has banquet rooms with a fully equipped kitchen. Constructed in 1909, the building also houses the collections of the Woodville Historical Center, which focuses on town history. Northwest of the city is the Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge .
