Howe Island is an island in the St. Lawrence River east of Kingston in Frontenac County , Ontario , Canada . It is part of the Thousand Islands chain. Howe Island belongs together with Wolfe Island and Simcoe Island to the municipality Frontenac Islands , which was created in 1998 through the merger of municipalities. Howe Island is approximately 13 km long and 5 km wide and has an area of 31 square kilometers. The main channel of the St. Lawrence River runs in the south of the island, while the Bateau Channel runs in the north between mainland Canada and the island.
The population of Howe Island in 2011 was 602 registered residents, this number grows in the summer months when the numerous recreational properties are inhabited.
Two ferry routes connect the island to the mainland: a county-operated ferry to the west of the township of Pitts Ferry , part of Kingston; and the township-operated "Foot Ferry" to the east of Gananoque.
