Lid shower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cover shower is a device in nuclear power plants that cools the cover of the pressure vessel in the event of a reduction in the water volume flow in the primary cooling circuit (for example while the reactor is being shut down) . This additional cooling serves to efficiently dissipate the decay heat .

Incident in Brunsbüttel

In 2002, in the now decommissioned Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant, radiolytically generated and accumulated hydrogen exploded in the supply line of the lid shower during operation in the reactor . The pipe was completely shattered and only a non-return valve between the explosion site and the shower prevented a loss of coolant accident from occurring . In addition, the explosion could potentially also the security container can damage.
