DeepSea Mining Alliance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The DeepSea Mining Alliance eV (DSMA) association was founded on April 9, 2014 in Hamburg to support deep-sea mining innovations on the basis of joint research projects. At the beginning of 2016 the DSMA had 24 members, most of whom came from the industrial sector.

aims

An important goal is for German companies to become pioneers for high standards in environmentally compatible deep-sea mining . This includes sustainable exploration, environmentally friendly mining under water, extraction on board the special ships and the comprehensive processing of marine mineral raw materials . Further goals are the representation of interests vis-à-vis politics, economy, science and society and the security of supply for high-quality metal raw materials.

background

Germany has had an exploration license for manganese nodules in the Pacific with the International Seabed Authority since 2006 . A second exploration license for massive sulphides in the Indian Ocean was added in 2015 .

German companies have so far played a subordinate role in the rapidly developing market for deep-sea mining. The association aims to change that, to further develop and implement environmentally friendly deep-sea mining, also to ensure the security of supply for high-quality metal raw materials.

Deep-sea mining includes technologies for the extraction, extraction and processing of marine mineral raw materials. They represent sources for Germany that have not yet been tapped. As an industrial and strong export country, Germany is highly dependent on the importation of important metal raw materials and rare earths .
