Deer Island , located in the middle of Passamaquoddy Bay , is a hub for ferry traffic in the border area between the Canadian province of New Brunswick and the US state of Maine . It belongs to the West Isles Parish in Charlotte County .
Off the southwest coast is Old Sow , the largest tidal vortex in the western hemisphere.
Ferries operate year-round between L'Etete and Lambertville and seasonally between Leonardville and Welshpool ( Campobello Island ) and Leonardville and Eastport (Maine) .
The 45 km² large island is dominated by agriculture, the less than 1,000 permanent residents living in the settlements of Lambertsville, Lord's Cove, Leonardville and Fairheaven are descendants of 1784 immigrant loyalists . In addition to agriculture, tourism and lobster farming are important.
Between the 2001 and 2006 censuses, the population fell from 851 to 824.
