Defeño

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Defeño , derived from the letters DF ( pronounced De-efe in Spanish and used as an abbreviation for the Federal District ), is a Mexican name for a person living in the capital district of Mexico City .

history

The name Defeño is still very new and first appeared in 1991. Since then, it has been used repeatedly in the media , but has not caught on in the common parlance of the capital city resident, who prefers to refer to himself as a Chilango .

The term Defeño came about around the time when Mexico City expanded significantly beyond the Federal District. The city, which is expanding ever further, now extends far beyond the Federal District and it is estimated that more than half of the residents of Mexico City live outside the area that has been declared as Federal District. The fact that the Distrito Federal and the term defeño derived from it does not include all people living in the capital, but rather excludes (at least) half of the city's population, seems to be an important reason why the term is not in the Population prevailed. Another reason seems to be that the term emphasizes the abbreviation of the administrative unit too much and has less of an identification function.
