The investor Cevian Capital demanded the sale of the unprofitable electricity network division, which Spiesshofer vehemently opposed. On October 4, 2016, the investor's day, the majority of the shareholders followed Spiesshofer's proposal to remain and reorganize them. Ultimately, however, in December 2018, the pressure was given in and the sale of the electricity network division to Hitachi was announced.
The former management consultant Spiesshofer wanted to convert the largest Swiss industrial company into a future company. In doing so, ABB was to transform itself from a capital-intensive mechanical engineering company into a company specializing in IT and technology services.
