action

The setting of the story is the fictional small town of Saint-Denis in Périgord in southwest France and its immediate surroundings as far as Périgueux . The local police chief Bruno is confronted with an abundance of problems: From the group of archeology students who work at the nearby excavation site, some environmental activists seem to be carrying out attacks on foie gras companies . The tied body of a man who was buried there about 20 years ago is found right next to the excavation site. The German professor in charge of the excavation appears to be covering up his brother in hiding, who is obviously a former member of the Baader-Meinhof gang . The forthcoming shortly Summit of the Interior Minister of France and Spain is of ETA - terrorist threat. In addition, Bruno is confronted with a still inexperienced, very lawful magistrate who tries to bring him out of his job. As an excellent expert on French conditions, however, he succeeds in reconciling the students with the foie gras producers and himself with the magistrate. His friend Pamela has to leave for Scotland to see her sick mother, but the upcoming ministerial meeting brings him back together with Isabelle, the love of his life. Everything seems to be going well, but a surprise attack by a well-camouflaged ETA man takes place.

rating

“Delicatessen” takes place in the largely intact landscape and environment of the Périgord. The main character Bruno gets along well with the population and his life, but also with those who break the law, he tries to reconcile wherever possible. He works very well as long as only PETA activists are up to mischief, but when ETA comes on the scene, he too has to resort to violence. The accumulation of problems is often so great that it is difficult to understand how Bruno can still concentrate on his dog, his horse, his garden and on cooking an exquisite dish for his great love.
