Demetrios of Byzantium (historian)

Demetrios of Byzantium (Greek Δημήτριος) was an ancient Greek historian of the 3rd century BC. He is not to be confused with the eponymous Peripatetic philosopher Demetrios of Byzantium from the 1st century BC. Chr.

Demetrios is only known from a mention in Diogenes Laertios , who reports of two of his works:

  • About the expedition of the Galatians from Europe to Asia in 13 books, in which the migration of the Galatians from their conversion to Asia (276 BC) to their settlement in Phrygia after the defeat against Antiochus I Soter (275 or 269 / 268 BC) is depicted.
  • About Antiochus, Ptolemy, and Libya under their government in eight books in which the in Cyrenaica be fought part of the conflict between I. Antiochus and Ptolemy II. Philodelphos including the revolt of Magas 275-272 / 1 v. Is described.
