Dendrobates alkaloids are natural substances that can be divided into more than 20 different classes.

Representative

The various classes of Dendrobates alkaloids include: a. the histrionicotoxins , pumiliotoxins and batrachotoxins . The representatives of the histrionicotoxins include u. a. Histrionicotoxin (283A). The main alkaloids of pumiliotoxins are pumiliotoxin A and pumiliotoxin B .

Occurrence

The histrionicotoxins were found in the harlequin poison dart frog ( Dendrobates histrionicus ), rarely called the poison dart frog. The pumiliotoxins are the toxins of the strawberry frog ( Dendrobates pumilio ).

Use and properties

The contained in the frogs of the genus Dendrobatidae z. T. highly poisonous alkaloids are used as arrow poisons by the Naonama, Cuna and Choco Indians in Colombia. Histrionicotoxin blocks the ion channel connected to the acetylcholine receptor.
