Monument to the air heroes

The monument of the air heroes ( Monumentul Eroilor Aerului , also called Monumentul Aviatorilor ) is a Bucharest aviator memorial and symbol of the city created by the sculptors Lidia Kotzebuie (1895-1944) and Iosif Fekete Negrulea (1903-1979) .

In accordance with the internationally cultivated elitist cult of the (mostly aristocratic ) aviator aces in the interwar period , a high-ranking committee was founded in 1927 to commemorate the Romanian aviators who had crashed while doing their job. After submitting 20 designs, Lidia Kotzebuie's design was awarded a prize in a secret ballot. It shows a winged man on an obelisk. Other figures surround the base of the monument. The 20 m high monument (of which the crowning figure is 5 m high) was ceremoniously unveiled on July 22, 1935 and dedicated to the Eroilor Aerului . It is located in the north of the city center on the Piața Aviatorilor , also dedicated to the aviators , about in the middle of the Bulevardul Aviatorilor , not far from the Triumphal Arch .
