background

With the entry into force of the Versailles Treaty on January 10, 1920, the Polish Corridor was created, with which Poland gained access to the Baltic Sea . The Polish government took this event of national importance as an opportunity tomarry their country to the sea ” on February 10, 1920 in a symbolic act . In the presence of the Interior Minister and later Polish President Stanisław Wojciechowski , General Józef Haller presented the Baltic Sea with a ring in Puck by throwing it into the waves. On March 18, 1945, this ritual was repeated in Kołobrzeg after the Polish and Soviet forces took the city. description

The monument is located on the Kołobrzeg promenade, Bulwar Jana Szymańskiego , between the pier and the lighthouse . The Polish flag is hoisted directly on the beach where the ritual was performed in 1945.

The main element of the monument is a stylized flag carried by soldiers. At the same time, it forms a large gate through which one looks out to the sea. All Polish units that took part in the capture of the city in 1945 are listed on stone slabs at the foot of the monument.

30,000 people attended the ceremonial unveiling of the monument on November 3, 1963. The chairman of the Polish Council of State, Aleksander Zawadzki, and the Minister of Defense, Marshal of Poland, Marian Spychalski, were present.
