Mattia Caldara (born May 5, 1994 in Bergamo ) is an Italian football player . The defender is currently on loan from AC Milan to Atalanta Bergamo .

Career

Caldara was born in Bergamo and was accepted into the youth department of Atalanta Bergamo , where he was active until 2014.

For the 2013/14 season , Caldara became part of the professional team and was in the first division squad for the first time . In the second half of the season he made his Serie A debut on May 18, 2014 in the 2-1 defeat by Catania Calcio , when he came on for Davide Brivio at halftime . In July 2014 he was awarded to the second division Trapani Calcio , for which he completed 20 games in the 2014/15 season and scored two goals. After his return to Atalanta, another loan to Serie B to AC Cesena followed in July 2015 . For Cesena, Caldara played 27 games in the 2015/16 season in which he scored three goals.

For the 2016/17 season Caldara returned to Bergamo and became a regular after a few weeks. Due to his good performance in the first half of the season Juventus acquired the transfer rights to Caldara on January 12, 2017 for 15 million euros and provided him with a contract until June 30, 2021. However, he remained on loan in Bergamo for a year and a half. With the team he reached fourth place in the table at the end of the season and thus participation in the Europa League 2017/18 .

At the beginning of the preparations for the 2018/19 season , Caldara was presented as a newcomer to Juventus Turin. He then took part in the preparatory tour in the USA , which included some games as part of the International Champions Cup .

On August 2, 2018, Caldara switched to AC Milan in exchange with Leonardo Bonucci , with both transfer fees set at 35 million euros , with which he signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2023.

In a year and a half, the defender had only two competitive appearances due to injuries to his cruciate ligament and Achilles tendon, one in the Europa League and one cup . In addition, he ran three times for the A-Juniors of the Milanese at the Campionato Primavera , whose participation per team up to five players over 20 years are entitled. In January 2020 he was loaned to his old club Atalanta Bergamo until the end of the season.

National team

In March 2016, Caldara made his debut under Luigi Di Biagio for Italy's U21 national team in a 4-1 win over Ireland . By the end of the year he was used in eight other games.

On May 25, 2017, Caldara was nominated by national coach Gian Piero Ventura for Italy's friendly against San Marino on May 31. With this Caldara was in the starting line-up and scored the meanwhile 5-0 in the 8-0 victory. After a one-year break, Caldara played in the friendly against France in June 2018 and in the Nations League game against Portugal in September 2018. He has not been nominated since then.
