Mario Pašalić (born February 9, 1995 in Mainz , Germany ) is a Croatian soccer player .

As a teenager, the midfielder moved from his youth club Hajduk Split to Chelsea . He was under contract with the Londoners for six years, but did not play a single competitive game and spent this time as a loaner at various clubs. His last loan deal took him to Atalanta Bergamo in July 2018 , which finally signed him in September 2020.

For his home country Croatia, he played in various junior selections and in September 2014 he made his debut in the senior national team .

Career

Hajduk Split

The in Rhineland-Palatinate Mainz -born Mario Pašalić moved back with his family at a very early age in the home Croatia. There he started playing football in the youth department of GOŠK Kaštel Gomilica before joining the Hajduk Split youth at the age of eleven . In the Bili he developed into one of the most talented midfielders of the club, who was able to distinguish himself primarily through his scoring qualities. In the 2012/13 season he was about to jump into the first team, but was slowed down by a staphylococcal infection, which put him out of action for months. His debut in the top Croatian league was finally until April 13, 2013 (27th matchday) when he came on for Ivan Vuković in the 90th minute of the 2-1 home win against Cibalia Vinkovci . Two months later he was also considered in the prestigious Vječni derbi against arch rivals Dinamo Zagreb , which he concluded this season with two short appearances in the men's selection.

In the summer of 2013 Pašalić signed a new four-year contract with Hajduk Split. Already in the 5-1 home win against NK Zadar on the first day of the 2013/14 season , he scored his first league goal. In the next few games he was used regularly. On September 14th (9th matchday), 18-year-old Pašalić shot his team with a brace to win a 2-0 home win against Dinamo Zagreb, by which time he would have the status of a regular at Hajduk and a great promise for the future had secured in the major Croatian media. This season he scored eleven goals and five assists in 30 league appearances.

Chelsea FC

On July 9, 2014, the English first division club FC Chelsea secured the rights of the talented Pašalić. Frank Lampard , the captain of the Blues , described him as his favorite player in an initial reaction to the change.

Loan to FC Elche

After some exercise under the head coach Jose Mourinho , he was until the end of the 2014/15 season at FC Elche in the Spanish Primera División on loan. He made his debut on August 24, 2014 (1st matchday) in the 3-0 away defeat against FC Barcelona . At the club from the Valencian Community , despite his little experience in top football, he was considered a regular player and fought with the club for the entire season for relegation. On April 12, 2015 (31st matchday), he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-0 away win against FC Córdoba . In the end of the season he scored two more important goals and Elche ultimately managed to escape relegation. However, due to tax debts of eight million euros, the Franjiverdes still had to move into the second-rate Segunda División .

Loan to AS Monaco

After Chelsea FC borrowed the Colombian striker Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco on July 3, 2015 , Pašalić switched to the French first division club on loan for the entire 2015/16 season . He made his debut on July 28, 2015 in a 3-1 away win against BSC Young Boys in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League and scored his first goal for the Monegas in that game. In Ligue 1, he met for the first time in the 1-1 draw against Olympique Lyon on October 16 (matchday 10). In February 2016, his season ended prematurely due to a back injury. Up until this point he had been on the pitch regularly and had scored seven goals in 29 competitive games.

Loan to AC Milan

On August 27, 2016, Pašalić was loaned out for the third time in his young career. This time he went to the Italian first division club AC Milan . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he didn't get a chance to play and the Rossoneri tried to shorten the loan deal until January 2017 just a month later. He made his debut on October 30, 2016 (11th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Delfino Pescara , when he was substituted on for M'Baye Niang in the 62nd minute of the game . In the next few games he played regularly and on December 4th (15th matchday) he scored his first goal of the season after a header from Gabriel Paletta's corner . On December 23, 2016, he recovered the decisive penalty in a penalty shoot-out for the Supercoppa Italiana and thus gave Milan their first title since 2011. Pašalić finally left the former top club at the agreed time in June 2017. During his time in Italy, he made five appearances in 24 league appearances Goals and an assist.

Loan to Spartak Moscow

On August 2, 2017, Pašalić signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea, but was loaned to the Russian first division club Spartak Moscow for a year on the same day . On August 6, 2017 (4th match day) he made his debut for the capital city club in the 5-1 away defeat against Zenit St. Petersburg when he came on for Alexander Samedow in the 72nd minute of the game . Just six days later (6th day of the match) he met his new club for the first time in the city derby against CSKA Moscow . At the krasno-belyje , however, he did not succeed in becoming the undisputed regular player, because head coach Massimo Carrera only relied on his services irregularly in the middle of the season . With four goals and a template in his luggage, which he was able to collect in 21 league appearances, he left Spartak Moscow at the end of the 2017/18 season and returned to London once more.

Atalanta Bergamo

On July 25, 2018, Pašalić returned to northern Italy for his fifth loan and moved to Atalanta Bergamo for the 2018/19 season . La Dea acted as the first club to have the option to sign him after the loan expired. In his first outing against Hapoel Haifa in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League on August 9, 2018, he contributed a goal and an assist to the 4-1 away win. He succeeded although he had only entered the field to replace Matteo Pessina in the 60th minute of the game . He also scored again in his league debut in a 4-0 home win against Frosinone Calcio on August 20 (1st matchday). Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini used him frequently this season and Pašalić was able to contribute five goals and three assists in his 33 league appearances to Atalanta's excellent third place in the league.

On July 4, 2019, Pašalić again signed a new working paper with the Blues and returned to Bergamo as a loan player for the 2019/20 season. On September 18, 2019, Atalanta's first Champions League game , which ended in a surprising 4-0 defeat at the Maksimir Stadium of the home team Dinamo Zagreb, was substituted on at half-time. On November 30 (14th matchday) he scored a brace in a 3-0 away win against newly promoted Brescia Calcio . A week later he scored in the fourth group game of the Champions League against Manchester City, the goal to the 1-1 final and secured Atalanta the first points in the premier class. After Dinamo Zagreb were then defeated 2-0, Atalanta in the last group game against Shakhtar Donetsk was enough to move into the final round with only seven points. Atalanta was the first debutant since Leicester City to reach the round of 16 in the 2016/17 season and was also the team with the lowest number of points in the history of the competition to do so. On July 14, 2020 (33rd matchday), he marked a hat trick in the 6-2 home win against Brescia Calcio . In the league Atalanta was again in third place. Pašalić contributed nine goals and five assists in 35 league appearances and experienced the best season of his career so far. The last stop in the Champions League was for Atalanta in the quarter-finals against the eventual finalist Paris Saint-Germain in the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon . Although he had put his team in the lead in the 26th minute of the game, the French turned the game in their favor with two goals in the final phase.

On December 2, 2019, Atalanta Bergamo negotiated a purchase option of 15 million euros in order to be able to permanently acquire Pašalić at the end of the 2019/20 season. The commitment was confirmed in June 2020 and he signed a five-year contract which he will take up on September 1, 2020.

National team

Pašalić went through all Croatian national teams.

On May 14, 2014, he was nominated by head coach Niko Kovač in the provisional 30-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , but was later removed from the final selection , without having previously played an international match . On September 4, 2014, he made his debut in a 2-0 friendly win against Cyprus for the senior team , when he came on in the 60th minute for Luka Modrić . After another international match in June 2015, he always appeared occasionally from October 2017 onwards. In the important games of the next few years, however, he did not get a real chance to prove himself and was therefore no competition in midfield for the traditional veterans Luka Modrić, Ivan Rakitić and Marcelo Brozović .
