Monument to Karl von Czyhlarz in the arcade courtyard

The relief portrait of the lawyer Karl von Czyhlarz was created by the sculptor Alfred Hofmann for the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna and unveiled in 1927. It bears the Maisel number 1.

description

The portrait relief for Karl von Czyhlarz is an upright and rectangular bronze art cast plate. On this, the head portrait of the lawyer is shown as a relief. The name, the knighthood, the dates of life and the profession of the sitter are given in capital letters below the relief. The relief slab is embedded in three stepped, proportionally growing light marble slabs that frame the portrait. Karl von Czyhlarz is shown on the relief in a profile looking to the left. The bronze relief depicts the lawyer as a man of advanced age, with thinning hair, a full beard and deep wrinkles around the eyes. In contrast, the sitter's neck appears soft and relatively youthful.

Analysis and comparison

The artist Alfred Hofmann not only created the monument to Karl von Czyhlarz , but also the monument to Carl Menger in the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna. Both objects have parallels and differences in presentation. Both panels were created in the form of a rectangular bronze panel with a portrait relief and an inscription containing the name, merit and dates of life. While the portrait of Karl von Czyhlarz is flat, for Carl Menger it was surrounded by a concave bowl in the style of Imago Clipeata and therefore appears deeper. The portraits are oriented differently: while von Czhlarz looks to the left, the portrait of Menger is shown looking to the right. Because of the surface treatment, the relief by Menger appears much more restless than that of Karl von Czyharz and much more agitated.
